Intensive care is the term used to describe the specialised care provided to patients who are critically ill and need immediate medical attention. In an intensive care unit (ICU), critical care and life support is given to these patients who are very ill, critical or injured. You will require a referral from your doctor or specialist to be admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), unless it is an emergency admission.
